I'm Nick. I live in Park City, Utah, and I run Mountain West Surface — a one-man concrete-sealing company serving high-end homes and commercial properties across Summit and Wasatch counties. I'm the whole operation: the estimates, the sales conversations, the jobsite, and the software underneath it.
The work is surface protection for a place that punishes surfaces. The freeze-thaw cycle here destroys unprotected concrete, and the hardscaping is expensive — so I seal driveways, patios, and decorative concrete with professional-grade systems, replace failed joint sealants, and keep silica-dust compliance on every jobsite. The clientele — second-home owners, property managers, commercial properties — expects detail, and quoting, negotiating, and managing that expectation face-to-face is as much the job as the sealing is.
Because it's a company of one, I also built the company's infrastructure: the brand identity, the search ads that bring in leads, and a web-based CRM that manages clients, quotes, and jobs. I made the CRM myself with AI coding tools. I'm not a software engineer and don't claim to be — I'm someone deeply comfortable with technology, stubborn about problems, and willing to learn in public. The same approach produced the trading systems and the homelab elsewhere on this site.
Winters, I work at Ski Butlers — every season since 2021. Summer mornings, before sealing weather, I forecaddie at a golf club in the area. Between the two, I spend most of the year face-to-face with the people who make this town run and the people who visit it — which turns out to be the best sales training there is.
Off the clock: golf — playing since childhood, hovering around a 10 handicap, with more launch-monitor data than any 10 handicap needs. Pickup basketball, and the NBA from the analytics side. Markets and long-term investing, approached the same way I approach gear: research first. Building PCs, a 3D printer that mostly earns its keep, and the skiing that explains the zip code.
My GitHub bio has said "beginner programmer" since 2020. I've decided to keep it — it's still how I approach most things.
